Funky Foods Cupcake Class with Sweet Designs by Jennie

Every month Amelia and I go to Sweet Designs by Jennie‘s cupcake class, often going to one of the newer designs! Jennie creates new designs monthly, with so many different ones to choose from. Amelia and I always have a fantastic time creating cupcakes, chatting with others, and learning new decorating techniques. As always, we showed up for our class and all of the cakes were already baked. Our fondant was set out, along with tons of tools, and we got right to it!

The Funky Foods cupcake class is the first class we have went to that was only fondant – no real frosting. We’ve been to quite a few different classes that mixed both fondant toppers with iced toppers, but this time we only created fondant. These fondant toppers were inspired by Jelly Cats, the popular stuffed toys, which were absolutely adorable. I did not think mine would come out this cute, but Jennie does a great job of explaining and breaking down each little figure into lots of parts, that give you a good idea of how to make them.

We started out by making all of the bases, so that they could dray a little bit and become ridged. These were all exactly the same in the Funky foods cupcake class, then we started making the little figures. Some were extremely easy, like the marshmallow pair that just required you to make little cylinders out of your fondant, where as others were more complex. Amelia’s marshmallow came out absolutely perfect and both of us did a great job at cutting out a long triangle and making a crescent roll, however, we both agreed that the cake was the hardest part (maybe because of the tiny candle that needed to be rolled and put on top!). All of them did turn out adorable!

Amelia ended up making some flatter, stumpy feet as she didn’t enjoy creating the long versions of them like I did, along with adding some ketchup to her hot dog character! She always is so creative and it’s fantastic that she can take the advise and guidance from Jennie but add her own twist to them. I really liked how different but similar our cupcakes came out. It was a lot of fun to do so much fondant work. Once we had all of the toppers sort of stuck together, we did a small amount of piping to frost the tops of the cupcakes, before plopping on the toppers and completing them. They all came out so cute.

You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
