Over the last few years, we have driven through High Wych after their Scarecrow Festival and have enjoyed seeing all of the different creations! This year, as it is their 10th anniversary, we made a big effort to actually catch the day that these scarecrows go out and go along to the festivities. The High Wych Scarecrow Festival is a very local event with lots of the local businesses in the area participating and many of the houses having decorations out.
We first went into the Enchanted Forest, which was right by the parking area for the weekend’s event. The Enchanted Forest is within a church, where you can find a bunch of different storybook inspired scenes made out of stuffed animals or crocheted items. This was such a precious start to our adventures! Robin found it fun to see the little robin’s in the room and even made a small burrow for a duck, in one of their interactive boxes. It’s cute that she still interacts with these sorts of things!
We then started walking around the town, seeing the various scarecrows that were dotted around the area. There was SUCH a big variety of scarecrows at High Wych Scarecrow Festival which will be left up for a few weeks, at the least. There were some modelled after The Muppets or characters from Toy Story, along with some that were handmade creations. This year there were also the Mr. Men all around town! It is a very adorable walk. In the middle of the town, as it is the 10th anniversary of this community event, there was a bunch of different statues from previous years, giving a big celebration of what they’ve made over time.
After walking around for a while, we headed to the main festival area, where there were a handful of little stalls selling things! I purchased probably the best sour dough I’ve ever had from What Could Dough Wrong (though I am sad to see generative AI being used on their Facebook page, as that does very much harm the greater planet), a bakery that just did cinnamon buns, smaller toy stalls, little games and more. This felt very much like a community festival at it’s core. The smaller games were all handmade and felt very nice. Robin won a little toy at Hook a Duck and we got a few smaller items from stands. Amelia picked up a crochet flower and Robin got a scrunchy as well. It was just a very fun time!
We look forward to hearing about the winning scarecrow from the High Wych Scarecrow Festival and seeing them over the next few weeks when we drive through the area! It’s so lovely to be a part of these sorts of local events, that are just dripping in community.
