Last year, due to lockdown restrictions, we actually got along to quite a few different Easter Trails in our local area. The kids had a really good time at them, so this year we took a look to see if any new Easter trails popped up, and found one at Hyde Hall that looked quite unique! Hyde Hall is a massive garden space, with plants from many different biomes. For Easter, they put a bunch of huge Eggs around their gardens, along with information on the flowers and riddles to guess what bird has the type of egg shown on the sign.
We packed up our lunch and headed out to Hyde Hall, doing a picnic there before finding the giant eggs. There is a little play park to the right of the entrance, after you get in and get your map / quiz, so we headed there and ate our lunch. The kids really enjoyed this park, though Amelia felt it did need swings. There was a rope swing that was similar to swings, some monkey bars, and a giant tree house with a few different floors. Robin, Kai and I explored to the top, before getting back out and using the slide. It’s neat that even adults could fit into it!
Once lunch was finished, we started on our trail. There are lots of different areas in Hyde Hall, including a geometry garden with bushes shaped like shapes and lots of different types of flowers. Dann particularly liked the dessert area – aimed at inspiring people to have their own plants as these plants didn’t need much care or water at all to thrive. Cherry blossom trees dotted some areas of the gardens, while others had large ponds, sleeping ducks, and so many different types of flowers. We went into a greenhouse, surrounded by a vegetable garden, and looked at all of the tulips inside there too. It’s a lot to explore!
When it comes to the eggs in the Easter Trail, they were bigger than Robin and just as tall as Kai and Amelia, really, which felt really big compared to other Easter Eggs! Each egg was very colorful, dotted around in an easy to follow pattern. The information board told you all about the flowers in the area, asked about what you had just been through to find this egg, and had some sort of word riddle to solve to figure out the name of the bird you needed. Some of these word riddles were really challenging, while others were super easy, so it was a good mix. Robin really had a magical time, being the youngest, and Kai and Amelia quite enjoyed exploring and checking out all the flowers. Hyde Hall also has a few different cafes on the gardens, allowing you to stop for some food or coffee if needed.
We had a fantastic time posing with the eggs and discovering the answers. In the end, the kids handed in their worksheet and got a little prize – a box containing two chocolates and a bunny-themed 3D puzzle with loads of facts about that type of bunny rabbit. Amelia was really proud of the bunny rabbit puzzle she got, reading the facts several times and quizzing people on them! It’s such a cute prize.
I’ve never heard of an Easter Trail before, what a fun idea! It’s too late this year but I’ll have to see if they do any around us next year. And I also like when the playgrounds are big enough for the adults to enjoy with their kiddos.
It’s always good to plan for next year! We always do an Easter Trail.
