We love crafting – and making lanterns just seems like such a staple around Halloween. So, I decided that this year we would make some stained glass inspired Jack-O-Lantern lanterns as a decoration! The craft itself is quite easy, you can leave young children to do it on their own, and doesn’t take much supplies either! You can make whatever face you want, add stickers or other decorations, and really make this your own.
What you need:
- Glue
- Scissors
- Paint Brush
- Yellow Tissue Paper
- Orange Tissue Paper
- Black Card
- String
- Plastic Tea Light
- Jam Jar
- First you want to take your tissue paper and start cutting out little shapes. These don’t matter too much – you just can cut whatever shapes you want until you have a little pile. I cut mine into long strips, then cut those stripes into squares, rectangles and triangles.
- Next, you can use your paint brush to “paint” glue onto your jar, sticking your shapes of tissue paper on top of the glue, and possibly using a bit more glue to get the edges down good.
- Once you have your jar covered, set aside. Cut some eyes and a mouth out of the black card and use a bit more glue to make your face.
- Tie your string around the jar to make a handle!
- Add in your plastic tea light (I would not use a candle if you are handing these to kids!)
That’s it! It’s a simple and easy craft that always comes out very cute. I love seeing these lights sitting around the house, flickering as the sky grows dark.
