April has flown by, and during the month, we had our first Little Cooks Co box! This box was picked by Amelia, for her monthly subscription. Robin, as previously mentioned, picked a learning and reading box as she is practicing reading. Amelia wanted to hone in on her cooking skills and work on new recipes, which is really excited for all of us as we get to eat them! When we signed her up for Little Cooks Co, we didn’t realize just how much would be in the box!
In April, our featured recipe was fruit tarts with custard. This is what all of the ingredients in the box were for, but there was also a bonus recipe of sweet potato gnocchi, seeds to plant some beans, a dried flowers and book mark craft, some ice breaker styled questions for the dinner table, a book to write all about the recipe in, and a guide to picking wild garlic. We also purchased a binder from the company, which allows you to slot in your recipe cards, creating your own cook book!
When it comes to the fruit tarts, there were just a few ingredients we needed to supply – fruit (Amelia picked mangos and blueberries) and liquids (honey, maple syrup and milk where what we used). All of the ingredients were divided into little bags, pre-measured, so it was really easy to follow the recipe, placing in the next bag, and mixing it all up. A lot of the different dry ingredients were actually items we had never had before – various types of flours and powders were easily used to make the base dough, and while it cooked in our muffin tins, we made up the tapioca custard – another new thing we hadn’t had! The fruit were set into their glaze to coat, and once everything was done, it was easy to put it all together.
The Little Cook Co box is meant to be done with an adult, not just given to kids to do themselves, so the recipe was easy to follow but one that children would need help with – to encourage cooking when them. When we were done with our tart, Amelia dished them out to everyone, who really enjoyed them – especially the custard! Amelia then used her little book to write the name of the recipe, fill in some stars on how hard she felt it was to make and how yummy it was, and a place to write what she learned, which was focused around the healthy aspects of the various flours.
Once we had tried our treat, Amelia found a bouquet of flowers to dry for her bookmarks, and enjoyed planting her beans as well! We didn’t end up using the table ice breakers, but they were cute. And as for the bonus recipe, we added it to the recipe book for future use. Amelia really enjoyed the independent feeling of having her own recipe and being able to guide me through it, and we had a lovely time with all of the activities in this box.
Fruit tarts with custard in mango and blueberry flavors sound so delicious! I love how simple these are to make, and that Little Cooks packs their boxes with extra exploratory activities. Being able to collect the recipe cards is a bonus too. 🙂
It’s a very thoughtful subscription!
This cook box sounds really great. Perfect for baking at the weekend with the kids.
That’s exactly what we used it for!

The recipe is truly fabulous, but even more so is the cooking box!

That’s such a lovely idea for kids. Even better (for an adult) to have guidance if you’re not a confident cook.
