Enjoying Matilda the Musical at Cambridge Theatre

We have been known to very much enjoy a trip to the theatre, but occasionally we book up the larger productions that have their own set theatre in London. Using the Kid’s Theatre Week discount, a few years back, we saw Wicked the Musical. Since then, Amelia has asked about seeing Matilda the Musical in London. This year, we were lucky with the Kid’s Theatre Week queue and ended up booking Matilda the Musical at Cambridge Theatre.

Getting to the outside of Cambridge theatre, we were all very excited seeing the giant Matilda the Musical sign. There are two different lines for two different entrances, depending on where you booked. We booked Upper Circle C seats, which are the same seats Amelia has seen a number of performances in, through her schooling events, and declared it “very good” for seating. We were in the middle, so could see very well. Robin, being a little short, got a cushion to give her a bit more height, but otherwise we were very happy with our seats and being up so high. There was also a bar and toilets just outside the seating in this area, which is ideal for grabbing drinks for intermission. Dann got Amelia a shirt and programme combo, which she was very happy with, as well. There are also signs in this lobby that let you know what actor is playing Matilda for the day.

Matilda the Musical is a very, very good performance. I do not think I have seen a play with this many young people preforming in it – and everyone followed so many of the dances and so much of the singing well. It’s very clear they are all extremely talented. Along with the wonderful acting, the actual stage is so magical. I am a sucker for a good stage setting, and this was the best I have seen. Dann says it’s because the play has been going at this theatre for so many years – but watching things pop up from the floor, desks appear, ways that they transformed the stage – it was amazing. There were moments when I feel our seats really made the stage magical – we could see so far back into it, watching the magic happen at the depth that the stage was.

We had a fantastic time watching Matilda the Musical, with Amelia asking if we can come back again next year. It’s rare any of the children want to do the same outing twice, so this was a fantastic sign. The musical followed the movie version of the musical very closely, though there was a few differences like the ending and a mini-scene during the intermission that really added to the entire show. It’s really worth the ticket price and a fun memory for all of us to cherish.
