[Ad- gifted product] As the resident watch expert at jupiterhadley.com I was provided the Mozsly Watch Winder to review. For those of you who may not be familiar with watch winders, or their purpose, they are devices used to keep an automatic watch wound. Before I get into why you might want to buy one of these devices, allow me to give you a quick crash course in watches. There are three main types of watch movements; quartz – the most common type, found commonly in low-end and more affordable watches, a movement typically powered by a cell battery. These watches keep excellent time and for the purpose of timekeeping, are superior to mechanical watches. Next we have hand-wound. These watches are powered by a coiled spring that the wearer must regularly wind up by turning the crown of the watch. Finally we have the automatic movement. Similarly to hand-wound, these watches are powered by a mainspring, but instead of having to wind the watch by hand it winds itself using a weighted rotor that spins as you move around during the day.
A watch winder is useful for this third type of movement. Watch enthusiasts such as this journalist at jupiterhadley.com often prefer hand-wound and automatic watches. This is because we are attracted to the beauty and complexity of the mechanical movements within, with their complex array of gears, wheels and levers all working in harmony to tell the correct time (with a typical margin of error of 10-30 seconds per day). Now, on to the reasons why a watch winder might be useful to you, the watch enthusiasts reading this article. An automatic watch will only keep running as long as you keep wearing it and move around regularly. If you’re like the author of this article you have many watches as part of an extensive and carefully maintained collection. A watch winder allows you set the correct time on another watch, put it in the winder and then when you grow bored of the watch you’re currently wearing you can simply swap it out for the one on the winder, which will be wound and set to the correct time.
Maybe you wear a more affordable dress watch to work, perhaps an Orient Bambino, but when you go out to a dinner party or the theatre you want to dress it up with your beloved Rolex Submariner or Grand Seiko. A watch winder allows you to have a second watch ready to go at a moment’s notice. There are further benefits to a watch winder. Mechanical watches are designed to be worn, their inner components lubricated with oils. An extended period of months or years without use can cause these oils to dry out or coagulate – this is bad for the movement and can lead to increased wear and tear and potentially require you to bring that expensive watch service forward that you’ve been putting off for a while. So let’s talk about the Mozsly Watch Winder. The unit I was sent is an attractive handmade unit, clad in a soft orange faux-leather. It includes two cushions for your watch that are adjustable to fit any watch band, a microfiber cloth, and a power cable. It is incredibly easy to use, and you will be up and running within minutes of opening the box.
There are a variety of modes that you can select for the TPD (Turns Per Day) of the winder, in order to ensure that your watch is wound as much or as little as required. Another useful feature of the winder is the ability to daisy chain with other Mozsly winders. This means that you can purchase several additional winders, link them together with the provided link cable, and they can all be powered with a single plug / power adapter. During my testing, I found that the watch winder kept my Calvin Klein automatic wound and ready to go. Not only does the unit look great on a desk as a display piece, it’s very affordable too. The winding mechanism is almost silent, which is great for those of you like the author who have the unit set up in your bedroom. I also really like that the winder has a screw-on glass window at the front, this protects the watch from dust.
I was surprised to learn that the unit is currently priced at only £72.42, which in my opinion is a bargain for something that is handmade and looks this good. Let’s be honest here, if you’re a watch enthusiast like me you’ve likely spent £1000s on your watches – you can afford £72.42 on something that displays them for you to appreciate, keeps them wound, helps with movement dormancy issues, and looks this good doing it. Even if you’re not an enthusiast and just have a single nice automatic watch I would still recommend Mozsly, especially this as an interesting display piece.
