Robin has been going to Perform Sheering for nearly two terms now, and it’s really quite fantastic. They did a sort of tester class at Robin’s school, which she really had a fantastic time with, and then she ended up asking to join up as it was the start of a term. She blended in seamlessly and looks forward to each and every class, which has been fantastic. Dann and I believe that having some sort of after school club or activity, especially with children from outside their school.
Perform isn’t a serious, rigorous acting and drama class. Instead, they focus on using drama-based games and exercises, along with songs and dances, to boost important development in children. Alongside setting up to preform a play, each week they have a focus that they work towards through their own games. One week it might be on public speaking – boosting your voice, and another week the focus might be on following instructions or even on showing your emotions. We get a little email after the session which outlines what the focus was and how it was implemented. Every few months we also get some feedback from the teachers, which is always very positive for Robin, reflecting on her dancing, singing, and general public speaking abilities.
This focus is very much seamlessly integrated into their practises for their show, which is at the end of every term. Everyone gets a role, their own lines, and there is often an app that goes with the play to help them learn the songs as well. Included in the term, children who participate get a special Crew shirt, with the logo of the play on it, which Robin has very much loved collecting too. Perform Sheering is ran by two teachers, Andrew and Caitlin, who have a lot of love for acting and show tons of enthusiasm that’s perfect for working with children. This is seen even more through their support on show days!
Each term Perform Sheering has two dates; an open day where you can see how far along everyone is getting and another that has the full show. The open day does show some of their other activities, which is interesting to watch, and a small selection of the show. I very much appreciate being able to go in and watch these little shows and see how much Robin’s grown. In the latest Perform showcase, we got to see Robin take on a major role, which was absolutely fantastic. The support they get from the teachers is lovely and it’s clear everyone is getting so much more confident.
