Watching Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs at Fairfield Halls Theatre

[Ad- gifted experience] Now, I have been to a number of pantos over the last two years, but I have not actually been to a panto with our children! I realized this on the way to Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, though I am not sure how we’ve missed them previously! Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs are a classic, and this time we saw the panto at Fairfield Halls Theatre, which was a new theatre for our household.

The theatre itself was massive, with an upstairs bit and a big area for pictures. They sold light toys, which kids had in the panto, and the play itself was nice and long. Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs is a story everyone has heard about, but that doesn’t mean this panto wasn’t new and refreshing. At the start, you could tell that there were going to be lots of modern references. A dance number that included Deadpool-masked dancers, songs we all knew, the use of the word “rizz” all showed how Snow White had made it’s way to the modern area, but these references were the main modern bits.

In most pantos, there is a dame, which is a very British thing. In this play, there were so many different outfits that the dame wore – with different references like Star Wars, McDonalds, a road, etc all having to do with the story. It was a real fun point to see what she’d come out wearing next. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs did follow the classic tale of the princess, being forced to work by her evil stepmother, who was obsessed with her looks and money. She did spend all of her savings on botox and ended up needing to marry the prince, who had the seven dwarfs working for him in the coal mines. Some of these dwarves were played by little people – there were actually a huge number of actors, dancers, and even a band at the bottom of the stage.

The panto itself was very funny and well written, with a lot of laugh out loud moments. There were jokes that went over the kids heads, an entire new rendition of “12 days of Christmas” the resulted in a lot of stuff thrown into the audience, and a break at the end where kids went on stage to sing along to a song. It was fun, engaging, and the wrapped up with a lesson; a really high class panto, ideal for the holiday season. I have come to notice specific moments that make a panto a panto – shouting at the villains, the weird bench scene with singing, lots of references that they are actually in a play, etc. It’s all done in Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, creating a very fun play that everyone enjoyed!
