Spring Bento Box Cupcake Class with Sweet Designs by Jennie

Every month, Amelia and I carve out some time to do a cupcake class. We’ve been doing this for well over a year now. It’s just such a lovely way to have one-on-one time with Amelia, and alongside that, we’ve become friends with a lot of the other regulars there and love doing little updates on our lives. Sweet Designs by Jennie is always creating new classes and designs, so there is always something new for us to look forward to creating. This was doubly so when she announced her new Bento Box Cupcake Classes, which have a few cupcakes along with a mini-cake within the box that we also got to decorate. This one was the Spring Bento Box Cupcake Class!

The main new thing here was the mini-cake, which is the first thing we started on. We needed to use a tool I was convinced wouldn’t even work to cut the cake in half, so that we could then add jam and icing in the middle of the cake. Once it was filled, the design was meant to be more of a naked cake, and it was set aside. I have not filled a naked cake before, so I liked the explanation on how to make the sides look interesting.

We then got out our fondant and started making all of our toppers for the Spring Bento Box Cupcake Class – and there were a lot of flowers! The idea behind this design seemed to be lots of wildflowers inside a mess of grass. We made these little daffodils which used a stamper we had never used before. Amelia was so quick and good at making the middle part of the flowers, but I struggled! We also made smaller blue flowers by using the ball tool to thin out areas of the flower after cutting them out. It was just fun putting together the various flowers.

Amelia is such a pro at decorating cupcakes, she went well ahead while chatting and made her bees – which came out SO cute, and once all of the fondant decorations were done we started putting together our cake and cupcakes. This was done in the box, with everyone piping on a bunch of grass before putting on our fondant toppers. I do like using my toppers to cover up any sort of mistakes. Amelia piped some of her extra jam into some of her daffodils, which was so cute as well. We both had a fantastic time at the Spring Bento Box Cupcake Class and cannot wait to see what other mini-cake classes Jennie does!
