Each and every year, Dann, Claire and I all go to a wintertime light walk, checking out all of the Christmas decorations and feeling the festive season. This year, Claire picked out Ickworth’s Light Nights, which isn’t particularly Christmas-themed, and felt very unique to other light walks we’ve previously been on!

While on our adventure to Wookey Hole, we did have a full day of just visiting the local area. As the weather was so wonderful and nature so plentiful in that area, we decided to go to Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve and have a big walk about. Dann and I decided to do this as a photography walk, as we had been taking so many photos of the new places all day, and figured that brought more adventure and slowed down the walk – which was already quite long – so smaller feet (Robin’s specifically) could keep up.

The National Trust is an organisation that maintains various gardens and historical properties throughout England. Many of the places within the National Trust are free to visit, but some do cost fees or have car park fees nearby them to help maintain them. We ended up getting a National Trust membership, which allows us to park in carparks for free, go to a bunch of places that do cost, and otherwise attend National Trust seasonal events. There is a lot on in the National Trust, and many places to visit. As we live in the Essex area, we decided to explore as many of the local National Trust sites as we could, and we’ve picked out a bunch of our favorites from our county and the bordering ones! I am a big fan of history and do enjoy walking around castles. There is something quite fun about looking around at ruins, especially those that use to look so daunting and impressive, but now have missing pieces, are no longer used, and are not up to current standards of living. I don’t often pass up an opportunity to share history with my children either, and with our National Trust cards in hand, I was excited to get along to some castles! One of the first on our list was Bodiam Castle, since it’s not that far from our home at all. This site end up being one of our favourite sites from the National Trust in Essex.
There were so many lovely Easter Trails this year, and we tried to go to as many as we could! One of the shorter trails were at Bourne Mill – a small Elizabethan mill from the 19th century. This building is right near a beautiful pond, full of birds and wildlife. At the moment, the mill itself isn’t currently open to the public, but you can stick your head in and watch it turn with the water, moving as you walk around the grounds. There is plenty for a good short day out, and for Easter, they put on a pretty fun trail! Even without the trail, Bourn Mill is one of our favorite National Trust sites in Essex.
