While I was in King’s Lynn for a work event, Dann and I decided to check out the local area. We were recommended The Dice Box, which had recently opened in the area, and was actually running some sort of event night. We have our local Geek Retreat and have been to similar board game themed places like the Loading Bar in London, so wanted to check this out! The Dice Box is a franchise, like Geek Retreat, so there is a system to it and similar ones across the country have the same vibes.

The Dice Box is a board game cafe and bar, which had a drinks menu, some food and pizza, and a bunch of board games, of course. You do pay per hour that you are there, but everything is paid at the end, so you won’t end up paying for more hours than the ones you stay. This fee is also quite small, sort of to make sure you aren’t just there playing the board games and not contributing to keeping the lights on, I think! They also have a stamp card, and so when you have spent a specific number of hours there you get an hour free, which is a nice touch. When we arrived, we were greeted by two people who clearly love their job and their shop, which is always a good start. They explained the fee and then gave us a breif tour of the board games before sitting us at our table.

The Dice Box has a huge selection of board games and all of them are well organised. There was an area for family games, an area for specifically two player games, an area for longer form games, and a shop area where the games are sealed and you can purchase them. This shop area also had a few shelves of 3D printed things like dice towers and fidgets, which was also interesting! Seating was plenty around the shop, with a massive table that had like at least 15 people around it playing DnD. We grabbed a few board games and had a seat, looking over the menu.

When it came to food at The Dice Box, there were all sorts of deals, so we ended up going with one that had us getting a specific number of small plates. I got a soft pretzel, which was nice and salty though it stuck a lot to the paper, some parm fries which were perfectly seasoned, and some poutine fries which had plenty of gravy and cheese! These were very filling and work well as snack-y food, though they did have pizzas and foods that could work as an entire meal. They also had some more simple and less flashy cocktails too, which I ordered!

This specific branch of The Dice Box also works with a local baker to provide a selection of desserts. I got a lemon meringue bun, which was so delicious – tart and sweet. I actually dug in without taking a picture of it on it’s own, because I was so excited. The place just had fantastic vibes and felt like a great date night destination, especially for those that are a bit on the geeky side. The staff were fantastic, they really knew the games there and could read when someone needed help. It’s just a fantastic place to stop by and hang out.
You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
