My younger brother is visiting me from small town New York! This is quite the excited adventure, as I didn’t really think my family would really start flying across the world to visit me. He just graduated High School, so for his gap year, he has decided to do some traveling and generally taking things slow. This means that he is attending gaming events with me and exploring the city. He’s super interested in Russian history, space, and seeing the amazing museums around London. If you didn’t know, most of London’s museums are actually free, with small paid exhibitions that swap out, making it a very affordable day out in the city. We selected the Science Museum for his first weekend out.
On his first weekend here, we actually had a big lunch at Boa Soho with a bunch of games people. Introducing him to my friends was a very good time, especially as he does have an interest of games, though his pallet is very limited so he didn’t really enjoy trying new food. He’s one of those people who found 5 or so foods he loves and sticks just with those. Once we were done eating, we set off for the Science Museum.
The Science Museum is the second museum I had actually visited when I came to England, years ago. My brother really wanted to see the space section, so we figured we’d head over. With Dann in tow, we started wandering around the Science Museum. There is a lot to see in this museum, though it is smaller feeling than the Natural History Museum next door. Going on a weekend guarantees a much more packed area to walk around with, especially as it’s during the summertime when people are getting out. Going during a weekday really does cut down on the amount of people that could be in your way or blocking random stuff you want to see.
The space area has walls of information, loads of space-related things to look at, and a moon lander chilling in the middle of the room. The space room was a bit smaller than I had remembered, so we wander into the next area which had loads of old modes of transportation, trains, and little items from years ago. The Science Museum does also have a bunch of interactive areas, especially in the Who Am I? and Engineering my Future sections. These areas had games about global warming, parts of the planet, fuel types, and games on different types of feelings.
We also saw this really cool stained glass car that is meant to represent the future of cars. It’s a driverless car that people could just sleep in or lay in and watch the world through colored glass as you drive through it. That, for me, was a very cool idea and I look forward to someday being able to actually be in a car like this!
My brother took a small camera, that he brought around to take a bunch of pictures with before switching to my Cannon for some more pictures. We wandered around for a few hours, checking out everything on these four to four and a half floors. There were other areas, like a Top Secret marked area about spys, but we weren’t interested in that and wanted to just look at select areas. We are planning on checking out more museums in the future, as he really wants to take in all of the information and culture that can be seen at these places. Also, it’s pretty great being able to show stuff to my little brother.
You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
