Exploring the Bay of Abandoned Hotels in Kupari, Croatia

When going to Croatia, one of the things that people kept mentioning was “exploring the abandoned hotels”, so obviously we wanted to have a look for ourselves. There are three really large hotels on the bay, which have all been abandoned after being shot up during the war in 1991. They have been left to rot and rust, some of which have serious fire damage, and many of which have graffiti.

As of April of 2025, there are fences put up all around the bay of abandoned hotels – we believe because a lot of the roofs have started to cave in, so there isn’t a lot of structure left to what is there. These fences are reenforced, and when we went, there wasn’t an easy way to actually get around them. Beyond the fences that do not let you near the buildings, all of their entry points had more fences and warnings on them, so we felt it was best to obey the local rules and not break into these once used hotels.

The outside of the hotels along the Bay of Abandoned Hotels was very stunning and interesting on it’s own. You can spot a lot of graffiti that has been layered on over the years, along with things like fire damage and the slow destruction of the roofs. It’s right on the ocean, so the beautiful, blue water beach right next to these old, left to rot buildings is something very interesting. We took the time to follow the path around them, then make our way out to the other side of the land, where there is a giant blue X on the ground, indicating a photo spot with all of the abandoned hotels in the background.

Even though we couldn’t go inside the hotels, it’s very interesting to walk around and think about what happened to this previous tourist destination. It’s very clear these hotels were fancy and held a lot of value, all before this sort of war and destruction happened.

I’ve heard a lot about Croatia from a friend of mine who visited it a couple of years ago. I would love to explore it, such a beautiful country.
