Dann and I did a little explore of Cambridge, where we wanted to have some slow mornings and some walking around afternoons enjoying the sunshine. On both of the days we were in Cambridge, we explored the Cambridge Market Square. This is a historical, outdoor market right in the centre of the area, with a bunch of different independent stall holders. It’s open every single day of the week, so we were excited to see if it changed and how the market held up.

The first day we arrived in the afternoon and were happy to see that most of the market was full, despite it being a random Wednesday! There were lots of different stalls, from hand-made hats to t-shirts, to records, to lots of food. Dann and I are big food people, so we started checking out the various stalls, and were happy with the variety.
We ended up getting some honey lemonades with different flavors mixed in, which were delightful and refreshing! We also stopped by a bakery stall and grabbed some cakes, with me going for a cherry pie-like tart and Dann going for an egg tart. In the middle of the market, there is a sort of old fountain, that many people were sitting on as it was right in the sunshine! There were also tables nearby for eating, and some people were set up there with packed lunches.

We also explored around and took a look at the gem table as well as a used book stall, so the variety at the Cambridge Market Square was very good. I liked specifically that there weren’t any drop-shipped items or anything that just looked like cheaply made tat. It was a good selection with a lot of different things to look at. There are some stalls that only take cash, though it was only a few, and lots of stalls that were calling out and offering free samples as people pass.
The next morning, we went back, and I honestly thought “oh I’ll get another cherry slice from that bakery person” only to find that some of the stalls switch around. Instead of a bakery, there was an antique shop! I was surprised at just how many shops changed on a Thursday from a Wednesday. There was a dim sum place suddenly open, that Dann and I got the most delicious dumplings from. We got more of the honey lemonade, though there was now a t-shirt stand, and a stand of home made decorations for your house.

The Cambridge Market Square does feel like something you cannot miss when being in Cambridge – it’s like all roads lead to there. Often someone is playing music right on one of the sides, so it almost draws you into the place. I very much enjoyed my time eating and exploring the market, with so much changing from one day to the next, it felt refreshing.
You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
