Rainbow Cupcake Class with Sweet Designs by Jennie

Every month, Amelia and I carve out some mother-daughter time to decorate cupcakes! This time, we went along to the Rainbow Cupcake Class – a class that has been around for quite some time, but we hadn’t actually gone before. Sweet Designs by Jennie does a handful of these classes each month, often with different themes, and we always pick a new one that we haven’t done before. The rainbow class has been one that Amelia had been eyeing for quite some time, as we hadn’t done multi-colored frosting yet.

When we arrived, as always, everything was placed out at our stations. Sweet Designs by Jennie has a moderate class size of six people, plus Jennie our teacher. She had portioned out our colored fondant, buttercream, placed out our tools, and baked our cakes. All there was left to do is decorate! We started off by putting our frosting in sections in some plastic wrap, before folding them into a sausage, cutting one end, and putting it into a piping bag. This is what made our rainbow cupcake frosting – which was extremely satisfying to do. Then, we set it aside to work on our fondant decorations.

Following theme of rainbow, we had a rainbow plate to make by rolling out and sticking together long thin tubes of fondant, before cutting them out and frilling the edges with a tool. We also made some simple, smaller roses through rolling out and cutting circles, sticking them together, then rolling and cutting them again! These little details were very fun – and we had not done roses like this before. I feel there is always something new to learn every single class.

Once our fondant toppers were made, we went back to our bags of icing and did a few different designs with both the rainbow buttercream and the white buttercream. We then added on fondant toppers and sprinkles! The colors on the rainbow cupcake class was so vibrant. The atmosphere of the class is always so good too. Sweet Designs by Jennie feels welcoming, always able to understand and give people the time they need to chat and to work on their designs. It’s just so much fun! We very much look forward to our next class, which includes decorating a mini-cake.
