We have very nearly seen every single Horrible Histories play. With just two left, when Horrible Histories – Barmy Britain was shown as playing locally, there was no way that we couldn’t attend! We’ve actually never been to the Harlow Playhouse before, as a family, and decided to invite along one of Kai’s friends. Since Kai’s friend was with us, he was pretty busy hanging out, and we didn’t end up getting a family photo – but that’s okay, as we did enjoy the performance so much – as did his mate.
Horrible Histories – Barmy Britain focused on lots of history around, well, Britain and the kings who have ruled there. In the classic Horrible Histories style, there were two actors that were constantly changing out of outfits and changing characters, while also narrating the story that they were following. There are dancing, songs, and lots of funny moments, perfect for young ones and teens who are interested in history!
Horrible Histories – Barmy Britain had a theme of game shows throughout, which felt different to the other performances we have seen. One of the two actors took on the role of gameshow hosts, that mimicked shows like Jeremy Kyle, Top Gear and The Apprentice, but with the other actor dressed up as a king or a nobleman, trying to take part in this strangely adapted show. This was an interesting way to change scenes and navigate through story lines quickly, as well as inject a lot of humor into the show.
Dann, who knows history far better than I do, felt that the different points that they included were very good aspects of history – especially about the history of New Caledonia – something he himself had just learned about in the last year. These aspects of history were points that Kai and his mate, big history buffs, found interesting and paired with the creative delivery, it feels like the history will stick well in their minds and last longer with them. If you have children who you’d like to see more interested in history or who really enjoy history, Horrible History is always a great idea!
