With Christmas just around the corner, we wanted to start some new traditions for our family. Last year, the children all got the chance to meet Father Christmas and make their Christmas wishes. Because this year, due to Covid, there probably won’t be any of that, we decided to write Father Christmas some letters! All three of the kids sat down last month and wrote up what they wanted for Christmas and about how good they were – of course – and send them off, not really expecting a reply. I then took the opportunity to get some customized Lapland Letters done for each of the children, giving them a specific reply to them from Father Christmas himself.
The Letters
There are a variety of different letters to choose from on the website for Lapland Letters – from letters aimed at older children to ones specifically about elves or being good. There is definitely a letter that makes sense for most children out there. Along with the base letter, there are plenty of ways to actually have them changed and tailored to suit the children. The ‘Sprinkles the Elf’ letter, new for this year, was what best fit my youngest Robin. She is very excited whenever we visit London, and keeps talking about America (where Jupiter is from) so I figured it might be a fun one for her. As with all the letters, it can reference a child’s best friend, as well as their age, the gift they want, and what items she left out for Father Christmas last year. Robin can’t quite read yet, so we read the letter out to her, where she beamed and excitedly echoed back things read to her, filled with happiness.
For Amelia, my middle child, she received the classic letter regarding Santa’s Good Child List, which included a little document which states she is at the top of the good children’s list – a place where Amelia would fit nicely. She is such a kind, helpful, and caring child, it was perfectly appropriate for her. Again, it mentioned her best friend’s name, the toys she wanted, what she left out last year for Santa, her age and our town name, which really make the card personal to her. When she got this, she was so excited, reading bits out loud and beaming as she announced that she was so good that she made it to the top of the list. She even explained to me the next day that she’d talked to her friend about it – and how she was also placed on the nice list.
Now Kai was where we weren’t really sure. Being the oldest, he sometimes is a bit sceptical when it comes to Father Christmas. Despite that, he received one that was a bit different. He received one that talked a bit more about the meaning of Christmas – about how lucky Kai is. Over the last year, Kai has really started to become his own little person and has worked very hard toward understanding how lucky he is. The letter, titled ‘The Meaning of Christmas’, was perfect for him When he got his, he tucked himself onto he floor in the living room and slowly read the letter, before announcing that Father Christmas liked what was left for him last year and that all of his friends were going to have to believe in Father Christmas themselves now. He was very pleased.
All of these letters came with big maps and a beautiful, red envelope that looks like it came right from Lapland!
Bumper Bonus Items
If you’d like a bit more than a letter, there are a few different bumper items that can be added to the letter. This bumper bonus includes an I Spy game that also has, on the reverse side, a Santa Stop Here Door Hanger, which the children very quickly began colouring and hanging on their door. There is also a Christmas card that can be coloured in, a Santa Stop Here poster, which we will be hanging up on our window, a few postcards to send back to Father Christmas as a thank you, a Good Child Certificate, which is ideal if you have the Good Child Letter coming, and a Christmas Countdown sheet which, on the reverse side, works as a table mat to hold all of the stuff left for Santa. These little extras delighted the kids, who could not wait to get into them!
Magical Extras
Each child also got a magical extra – Amelia and Robin got some cute packages of Lapland Reindeer Food (which includes moon sprinkles) to sprinkle on the back garden to lure the reindeer here. Kai, on the other hand, got Mrs Claus Cookie Mix – which is something mentioned in his letter, as Father Christmas says that Mrs Claus has been cooking up a storm. He is very excited to make these cookies for Father Christmas – especially as they are his favourite – and we love the idea of baking together anyway, so that’s very exciting. Other extras include personalised chocolate bars, brass Santa keys, Christmas boxes and wishing star ornaments.
This experience was really wonderful, all three of my children were truly amazed and happy with their letters and continued to speak about them for days to come. If you’ve not had letters back from Father Christmas before and are looking to bring a bit more magic to this year’s festivities, Lapland Letters are a great option.
