A Day Out at Stick Man at Leicester Square Theatre

Stick Man

*AD – this experience was gifted to our family for this post. All opinions, as always, are our own.

Stick Man is a story book we’ve had in our household for quite some time and actually made it into our best Christmas Stories list. Stick Man is a bedtime story about a stick that gets lost, far away for it’s family, used in a bunch of different activities. Currently, with the run up to Christmas beginning, Stick Man has made it’s way to Leicester Square Theatre for families to enjoy.

Leicester Square Theatre is a new theatre for us – we had not previously been. It’s a bit smaller than others that we have reviewed, and everyone is on a flat floor. This means that if you are bringing little ones, you will want to be closer to the front and more central, as the sides are quite a hard view. There are boosters for smaller children, but being more center on a flat floor is best. There is a small bar at the back that you can purchase cold drinks and crisps from (no popcorn, lots of people were asking!). It’s a quant theatre.

Stick Man is a three person performance, with one main guy as Stick Man, a women as many of the other characters, and another guy who plays instruments, is the big voice Stick Man listens too, and is supporting characters. There are also big versions of Stick Man and his family, which are often held and used within the performance too, showing the different character’s feelings. Stick Man followed a lot of the story itself, finding himself chewed on by a dog, covered in sand at the beach, turned into a swans nest, and much more. Many of these had their own scenes with the character playing with Stick Man.

As this is a performance aimed at younger children, there is also a lot of audience participation. Stick Man talks directly to them. He’s used as a bat to hit a ball out to the audience several times, and there is a lot of question-and-answer style participation as well. There is a lot of fun to be had in the show and it’s very engaging, especially for younger ones. There is also a whole bit where Stick Man speaks to the audience and asks if he has been through enough!

Another really impressive part of Stick Man was actually the musical member of the show. There are a lot of different instruments used within the performance, including a whole jazz solo that Stick Man comments on when he is going over everything that happened to him. It’s great to have that sort of talent and really brings a lot to the show.

We had a great time watching Stick Man, with Robin enjoying it the most, as it’s mostly within her age group. Kai and Amelia both do love plays and found this one to be fun, especially with the different musical moments and the use of the platform within the centre of the stage.
