A Day out at Superbloom at Tower of London

Superbloom

Dann and I have actually known about the Superbloom event at the Tower of London for quite some time. You see, we went to an event in the Tower of London, which announced the event, along with an AR app that didn’t seem to go anywhere. They were looking for coverage on their AR technology in our day jobs, so we’ve been waiting around for when the Superbloom would be ready! If you didn’t know, the Superbloom is a garden all around the Tower of London, dedicated to the Queen, for the Jubilee. After seeing lots of pictures of how they predicted it would all look, we just had to go.

So, Dann and I booked tickets and made our way to the Tower of London. There are a few ticket options; you can book a ticket for just the up close Superbloom trail, or the trail and going inside the Tower of London. There is also a public, free, viewing path that is overlooking the gardens too. These gardens are full of loads of flowers, all promoting bees and other insects who can harvest pollen. There are over 20 million seeds planted, so it’s really a sight!

When we entered, there is a massive metal slide that looks like tons of fun! This was one of the first things officially announced with the Superbloom, but sadly, because the day was sunny, the slide was closed as it was too hot. This is something to be aware of, as we were there are 10 am, and it was already closed. They do not refund you or give you a ticket to go on the slide at a later point, and instead you’re just stuck without it. If you bring kids, this could be really disappointing and we did see a few toddlers have full on meltdowns over the slide.

As you walk around the gardens, there are different signs which talk about the flowers planted there, about bugs that they targeted, or about the garden itself and how they made it. These signs give a bit of background and information – there aren’t too many of them either, so people do not get crowded together much. There is also a little booklet which states the different flowers, though we didn’t pick one up as we are trying to be more zero waste, and instead read the signs. There are plenty of places to sit as well, along the way, which is worth noting!

The flowers themselves were really amazing. Some areas were patchy, but a sign explained that that was due to wind and extreme (for the UK) weather after planting, but that those flowers would come a bit later. It felt like the flowers where colour schemed, with some whites and blues showing up, a whole area of different oranges, etc. It’s one of those things that just looks lovely. There are decorative areas as well; a giant weaved path leading to a huge basket that you move inside of. Another area featured metal butterflies and dragonflies. Some paths were raised so you could walk above the flowers, the whole thing was very well designed.

Along the way, there are several areas where people are taking pictures of you, professionally. This was interesting, but in the end, you do need to pay for these online to get them. They aren’t super expensive, but it’s worth knowing that it does cost to get the pictures. That wasn’t explained to us when we started as the guy said “complimentary.” The photos came out really well, but each photographer didn’t connect them to the same bundle, so some bundles have 1 photo in them only. It feels really unorganised!

Beyond that, walking around and enjoying the flowers in the moot of the Tower of London is really a wonderful experience. It is a great place for pictures, and there are so many bees and other bugs enjoying the flowers. It’s a great way to give back to nature, as well as bring some colour to the outside of the tower. There is a small gift shop near the exit, which showcases some naturally made items, which is a nice touch too if you want a little something to remember your trip.

You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!

When I was younger I thought that the “Tower of London” was in fact just a tower … then the story and my interest made me understand the reality. However, it is a place that I would very much like to visit.

This is gorgeous, I could spend a whole afternoon looking at and taking in all of those beautiful flowers! I wish I had a spot like this near me.

Oh wow, that is lovely, isn’t it. I think it’s worth going to see the flowers. I’d probably take my own photos, thanks for the heads up.
