[Ad- gifted experience] The other day, Dann and I went back to Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch to watch the musical The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole. When Dann was younger, he actually read the book this play was based on, however I had not experienced this book, and was interested in what we would see. The Secret Diary of Adrien Mole is about a young teenager, having a particularly eye opening and changing year.
This year starts off at new years, where he is clearly a bit unhappy in his home, as his parents expect a lot of chores from him, and school is a bit tough when it comes to bullies. However, when attending school, there is a new girl who he (and his best friend) have fallen in love with. His focus, like most teenage boys, is just impressing her. However, Adrian Mole is a writer, who writes poems along with writing in his diary. His year continues to get more interesting as his parents start fighting a lot, his dad spends a lot of time in the pub, and eventually his mother moves out completely, to a different part of England. Their school teacher portrait through the eyes of a teenager as an evil person – which was particularly funny. A lot of thought was put into this play.
It’s a lot of big changing for a teenager boy. His father goes into a depression, he still can’t get the girl, and he wants to be a little revolutionary to impress her. The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole does reference a lot of the events that went on in the year that it took place, including Diana’s wedding, which brings everyone together. Adrian has a lot of ups and downs in the year, which does follow quite an interesting story! This production at the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch is actually really surprising, as it’s a musical. This does mean there are lots of moments where they break out in song, but also, many of the characters had various instruments. People were on stage, playing the piano, cello, saxophone, and more. It seemed like most people could play more than one instrument.
Everyone who was in this play was so talented; singing, acting, and playing instruments. It was amazingly impressive! The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole is a really uplifting story of coming of age and dealing with all sorts of changes that might happen in your life, in a positive way. Adrian Mole is an interesting and funny character – an average teenage boy going through a lot at once. I had a lot of fun at the play, and really found the whole production to be amazing.
You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
I love theater and I am sorry that here in Italy there is no tradition as in the States, we are very good it is true, but there is something missing that instead I admire in your small or large works.
In the states, I am sure there is a lot of theatre! I am currently in England, which is where this one is. 🙂

I’ve never heard of this musical before, but it sounds like it would be a good one! My boys are just starting to enjoy musicals and theater productions after seeing their friend in a few ballets so we’ve been going more in the last year or so.
It is so good to go with the kids! We are going later this week with ours.
