The Snow Queen at the Polka Theatre

The Snow Queen

*AD – this experience was gifted to our family for this post. All opinions, as always, are our own.

The Polka Theatre is our favorite children’s theatre to attend! We’ve been there quite a few times over the years – and it’s really designed with little ones in mind. There is a dress up area, a bunch of toys, and a reading area while you are waiting for your show to start. There is also an outdoor play area enclosed, and a cafe. We’ve loved exploring this area over the years and feel it really creates such a great atmosphere and makes this theatre feel like a community hub!

The Snow Queen

But, this time, we went to see The Snow Queen. The Snow Queen is a four person performance, with each of these people playing multipule characters. The story is full of singing, dancing, and wild adventures. Two children, who are best friends and live next door to each other, want to go on an adventure to find The Snow Queen, who had cursed their small town to have unpredictable weather. This is a very big task, and right before they go on their quest, one of the kids named Kai, gets a bit of the Trolls Glass in his eye, which travels to his heart, making him angry and mad at everything. He doesn’t want to go on an adventure with his friend Gerta anymore, and instead is nasty to her and takes off on his own.

Gerta then spends the rest of the story trying to find her, convinced she was kidnapped by The Snow Queen. She meets a lot of strange characters along the way – my favorite and Amelia’s favorite characters were the flowers, who sang nonsense songs about what they had seen while being asleep under the snow. They were funny and not helpful to Gerta at all. Kai really liked the Ash tree, as it was a funny tree, and Robin loved the main character; Kai. Dann liked the tree characters as well, as they told the story and did a lot of narration.

The Snow Queen

The actors in The Snow Queen did a great job of acting completely different depending on what character they were – and the costume design made it super clear for anyone watching. The costume design and set design where both fabulous. I swear, each time we go to the Polka Theatre the main stage is completely different from the previous time. This time, there were this big ducts, that light up, acting as both trees and as ice – which were used in key parts of the story. The house, which was on the centre of the stage, ends up transforming to be more in the winter forest as well. The Snow Queen was a wonderful performance – it’s Robin’s favorite that we’ve seen there.

I love how enthusastic the actors are, and the ending had everyone singing along, which always a lovely way to end the show. We really liked the story and how different it was from Disney’s Frozen. There were a lot of good lessons around growing up, treating people nicely, and not making stories up if someone acts a bit differently.

The dress-up area, toy corner, and reading space provide pre-show entertainment, setting the stage for excitement. The enclosed outdoor play area adds an extra layer of fun, and the presence of a cafe enhances the community feel. I am hearing about the Polka theatre for the very first time but the snow queen show sounds like an interesting one to watch. The everyone singing along in the end is truly an attractive aspect.
