Watching (This is not a) Happy Room at the King’s Head Theatre

[Ad- gifted experience] Dann and I were very excited to be visiting a new theatre – the King’s Head Theatre to be specific! This theatre is right by the pub of the same name, just around the corner really, and opens up to a box office, followed by a small bar. The theatre stage is down a few flights of stairs, in the basement, where it’s a C shaped seating with the stage at ground level, in front of you. This makes for a really intimate feel to the whole performance, especially as actors walk on and off stage by going through the seating.

We went to the King’s Head Theatre to see (This is not a) Happy Room, which was all about a broken family. Some of the ways they were broken felt very relatable; family members not celebrating achievements that mean so much to others, ones not taking other ones seriously, and just generally not getting along. The show starts off with three siblings, who clearly do not visit with each other, all coming together for the 3rd or 4th wedding that their father is having, to a new person that only one of them has met once. Their dad is late, there is arguments brewing, and nothing seems to be helping.

Everyone in (This is not a) Happy Room had very good facial expressions and emotions throughout the play. As we were all so close and cosy to each other, you could see all of their micro-expressions as the story progressed. This wedding was full of tips and discovering different things about these three siblings, along with their parents and their partners. Their mother showed up, causing drama, with their great aunt who had dimension. There was a little twist about halfway through, that changed the direction of the entire show and put things into perspective. It was a captivating story that felt very entertaining and interesting to watch.

That is so so cool. I’ve never been that close to performers, I bet it’s a whole different experience to see their facial expressions. So cool.

The plot seems interesting. I personally love theatre, the acting is so raw there, no takes, no cuts, all so natural. Great

Looks like such an interesting play and I would love to see this myself. You are so close to the stage! I’d love to read the book as well.
