Unicorns & Rainbow Wreath with Sweet Designs by Jennie

Each month, Amelia and I have a little mother-daughter time going to a cupcake class in Essex, which is lead by Sweet Designs by Jennie. We’ve been going to a few different wreath classes, which are a more free-style cake decorating classes. Instead of a half dozen cupcakes, we decorate ten, and the idea is to make a bunch of little decorations and then add them wherever you want really! We started off the class, as usual, with all the cupcakes already baked and cooked and all of the frosting and fondant already out and ready.

We started by getting our icing into our bags. Amelia and I haven’t done any of Sweet Designs by Jennie’s multi-colored icing classes. We put all of the different icing, of which there were three, onto plastic wrap and then rolled them up into our icing bags. This was actually really easy to do this and feels so fancy when you see the icing on the cupcakes. We then started with all of the fondant. For the middle of our wreath, we made a circle with a ruffled outside, that had a phrase in it. Some people did the name of the class, while Amelia did “very cutesy, very demure” and I did “magic cupcakes”. This needs to set for a bit so that they are more ridged.

We also used some stamps to create shooting stars and unicorns, before stamping out some stars and pressing some flowers. We had both little flowers and big flowers. I am not the biggest fan of the flower press, as I always feel like my flowers get stuck in them, but they do look so nice. These flowers waited on a foam board, so that they had a bit of shape and didn’t develop a flat side. We did work on some of the more challenging fondant decorations; some ears for a unicorn, which was done by stamping out some circles, cutting them down, putting them together and shaping them as well as a unicorn horn. I have to say, the unicorn horn was so challenging! You needed to really twist and paint things together.

We also did some rainbows, which I was convinced I wasn’t going to get to look right, as I just couldn’t picture how it was done. Jennie did a fantastic job of demonstrating the entire process so that we were able to make the rainbows easily. These came out so cute too, through rounding long snakes of color around an icing tip, then chopping off the bottom. Once all of our fondant was done, we grabbed our cupcakes, used frosting to stick them to the board, then started decorating them. We swirled icing before adding all of our toppings – which came out so cute! The next class we have is autumn themed and I cannot believe how fast autumn has come around this year.

You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
