A Day Out at The Lost Spells at the Polka Theatre

The Lost Spells

[Ad- gifted experience] Once again, we found ourselves at The Polka Theatre – a lovely, child focused theatre with a large play area. This play area has dress up, building block area, books to read, coloring and a café, making it a really nice place to bring those who are younger! We do love playing in the play area of this theatre, but as I have previously spoken highly of the wonderful play area, we are going to dive right into the play that we’ve seen this time; The Lost Spells.

The Lost spells is a musical, featuring an impressive number of instruments. Whenever there are instruments being played live on stage, during a performance, I am always impressed. Even more so when an actor can play more than one instrument, which is exactly what was happening in this play. There were tons of scenes where actors played the drums, guitars, trumpets, saxophone, and more, bringing a lot of magic and vibrance through their music.

The play itself focuses on a young girl, who has just moved schools. She is a bit apprehensive about being the New Girl, and didn’t have the best first name, as she wasn’t even able to introduce herself. That night, she found a mysterious book of spells that are slowly disappearing, and used one to bring forth a sly fox. This fox then takes her on an adventure in the Wild Lands, showing her all sorts of animals and what they do. This fox was sneaky, stole her phone, and made sure she was able to see a lot of the world before returning home. He’s an interesting character, someone who is just helping in a new way.

The Lost Spells has a big focus on nature and not forgetting what is around you. A hare states “Have you ever loved something you don’t know the name of?” as a reason why everything should have a name and everything that has a name that is remembered, matters. Remembering the creatures of the forest and what they do becomes a big part of story, as this girl doesn’t even remember her name, let alone how to get back home. Learning the names of the animals will keep them alive, and knowing the ways of the Wild Lands will keep them from being destroyed. This story is quite lovely in the way it plays out, with each of the different animals having completely different personalities.

The Lost Spells

The Lost Spells also has a moment where the main character becomes a replication of herself as a puppet – and I really do find the puppets at The Polka Theatre to be so much fun to see! They are so accurate and such a fun addition to any of the performances. There are a lot of great themes in this play, about finding your voice, taking care of the world and seeing the small beauty in things around you. The Polka Theatre continues to impress with it’s imaginative and wonderful children’s performances.

Sounds like a really cool show. People playing instruments always impresses me too, probably because I can’t play one myself x
