Wahaca – Mexican Street Food | Restaurant Review

Wahaca

For my birthday last year, I wanted to go out to one of my favourite restaurants; Wahaca. It’s been some time since I’ve been, due to the whole lockdown situation and the lack of events in London, so it felt like a great time to journey into the city and try some tacos and street food with my family. My kids have actually never been to Wahaca, so it was very lovely to get to show them a restaurant that I have enjoyed. When Jupiter and I go to Wahaca, we normally order a bunch of small items from their menu and split them, so that’s what we did here.

Strawberry Daiquiri & Horchata

When it came to drinks, Jupiter ordered a Strawberry Daiquiri, which was sweet and tasted just how you’d expect, though they were out of straws which was a shame. I tried something new and went with a Horchata, which was done in oat milk, with cinnamon on top. It reminded me a lot of the rice pudding that Jupiter makes sometimes, tasting and smelling just the same, but of course not as rich. The kids all got juice, which came as apart of their kids meal.

Tacos: Pork Pibil, Mushroom & Feta and Chicken & Avocado

We ordered three types of tacos for dinner, opting with the classic Pork Pibil, which is Jupiter’s favourite. This is a sort of pulled pork taco, that doesn’t really taste like BBQ but does have a bit of heat to it. We tried the new Mushroom and Feta tacos, which were nice and juicy, though they weren’t as warm as we would have liked when we got them. Feta is often hit or miss with me, but these went down well and I liked the crunchy cabbage at the bottom. The Chicken and Avocado tacos were really nice, we ended up ordering a second order for Amelia and Kai as they were still hungry after their meal, but we will talk about the kid’s meals in a moment.

Trealy Farm Chorizo Quesadilla, Cheese & Chilli Croquetas, Crispy Cauliflower Bites and Sweet Potato “Bravas”

When it came to little bites, we went with the trealy Farm Chorizo Quesadilla, which is a cheese, chorizo and potato quesadilla – it’s got a bit of spice, is good hot, and is something we both always order. There was a few new items on the menu, including the Chilli Croquetas and Sweet Potato “Bravas”. The Croquetas were nice, tasting a bit like mac and cheese balls with bits of chilli in them. The salsa on the side was not spicy and I really enjoyed the refreshing flavour it adds to the cheesy balls. The Sweet Potato “Bravas” were also quite good and very filling. These were big bits of sweet potato with a avocado sauce and a side of Bravas-styled tomato sauce. You can never go wrong with Wahaca’s Crispy Cauliflower Bites, which are spicy, warm, crispy and come with a creamy sauce that is perfect for dipping.

Kid’s Build Your Own Tacos

The kids got build your own tacos, which is a really cute idea. They even come in these little, colourful taco warmers, which was nice to see come out. The meal comes with a drink and is well priced for what it is – it’s just not enough to really fill up a child over the age of 5. Robin enjoyed hers and was full afterwards, but Kai and Amelia needed something more. Amelia and Robin went with chicken tacos, which included a few veggie sticks (cucumber and carrot) as well as tomato, lettuce, guac, 3 tortilla chips, cheese and meat. Kai went for steak tacos, which he did enjoy, but again was still hungry afterwards. We ended up ordering the older two some extra chicken and avocado tacos, which did the job.

Wahaca has always been a favourite, and will continue to be one! I am very happy my children enjoy Mexican food as much as me and are willing to try new foods and taste test the foods that Jupiter and I order. It was a wonderful birthday out and a memory that will stick in my mind for years to come.

I love tacos but I’m well aware that not all tacos are created equally. Looking at the Wahaca menu is certainly enticing. When I make my visit to Londontown in a few months, I’ll stop in and try the chargrilled steak and cheese tacos.
