Seeing all of the wonders at Watermouth Castle

We got to Woolacombe Bay each year and always find somewhere nearby to go on the last day. Last year, we went to the Quince Honey Farm as per the promotion going on at Woolacombe Bay and this year they had a little promo with Watermouth Castle, so we wanted to check it out. Watermouth Castle has a lot more going on then we first thought when arriving. It is in fact a castle, but also an amusement park, which is absolutely fantastic.

The first bit of Watermouth Castle is walking through the castle, which has lots of different rooms set up with… stuff. The first room has a bunch of animatronic creatures playing music. The next room was a kitchen, full of kitchen items and washing items. Another room was filled with vacuums throughout time and another had a bunch of figures doing various household tasks with old machines. Another room had an absolutely massive model train track. It does feel quite random, but it’s neat to see all of these different things! There is a huge penny arcade (you do need to bring your own cash as they do not take care or have a card machine) and a dungeon. We spent some time in the dungeon, which is a mix of rooms of more random stuff (a fairy room, a room set up with models making pottery, a room of cow figures, a hall of mirrors), but there is also a spooky walk that feels a bit creepy, though none of us were scared.

After exploring all of the castle, you sort of spit out at the side, where there is a big courtyard and a little gift shop. We went to the shop and grabbed some fudge to snack on, before waiting for the light show. This light and water show happens every few hours, encouraging everyone to get a seat. It was my favorite bit of Watermouth Castle, and Amelia’s as well. The show itself starts slow, with an animatronic band set playing themselves, before the lights and water start up. This is quite unique and spectacular to watch. The display runs for a good amount of time and is well worth going to! It felt very British Pride themed, with flags waving and lots of music. We had lunch in the courtyard, which had options like pizza, burgers, jacket potato, etc your sort of default food options.

From there, we went on a wonder, seeing a giant fountain that filled up slowly with water and then rang bells! Watermouth Castle is absolutely massive and we did not have enough time to explore it if I am honest! I would recommend getting there early in the morning if you want to check it all out. The walk between the courtyard and a fairground style area has a bunch of different interactives on the way; animatronics you can bring to life with a push of a button and different images you can display by pressing something. It’s quite fun to walk down this path and stopping every few minutes to see what the next thing did was fun. We then went on a small walk through a little people village, where we saw a bunch of gnome statues inside their houses, doing a bunch of tasks and living their lives. Robin particularly enjoyed this bit, as she was small enough to perfectly fit in a lot of the buildings, which was entertaining.

We then went to the amusement sort of area, where there were a bunch of water fountains working on physics that all three of them wanted to touch and interact with, a few steam powered rides, and a maze that we got lost in. We did eventually make it out of the maze after finding the end was shut! We then went on the world’s longest slide, which was in fact very long and fast, a highlight for Kai. Walking through a flower garden lead us to one of those giant water bubbles built into the ground to splash about on without getting wet. There was also a giant kaleidoscope here that was fantastic to look through. At this point, we had probably explored about half of the entire park, but as it was getting late we did start our journey back home.

Watermouth Park is an extremely unique place, kind of reminding me of a much larger Mountfichet Castle, with just lots of stuff being added on and into the area, creating for a fun and interesting day out.

You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
